Nut update – almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts

20. April 2017

Almond update

The new season has had a successful start: up to now, the main European growing regions of Italy and Spain enjoyed good weather. Widespread anxiety about potential night frost, which could have destroyed or damaged the blossom and, as such, foundation for the almonds, turned out to be unfounded. In California, the world’s largest almond region, prognoses for the new harvest are underway. According to the latest estimates, the Californian almond harvest is expected to take place a little later than it did in previous years. At the moment, the 2016 crop is still being sold, and demand is high. No surplus is expected to remain.

Walnut update

The export of whole walnuts in their shell is currently booming in the US at a level of 21% above the previous years. China, Ukraine and Europe are the most important importing countries for the Californian walnut farmers. After the harvest, walnut prices will continue to rise;  this will directly influence the price development of so-called oil stock walnuts. At OPW Ingredients, quality is our top priority. We have already been able to secure certain quantities and are looking forward to sending you a personal quote. The walnut trees are yet to blossom, and we will keep you updated on all developments – as ever. Over the course of the coming months, we will be able to provide you with a first prognosis about the new crop.

Hazelnut update

In terms of the weather, the Turkish main growing regions have been less lucky than Italy and Spain: at the end of March, night temperatures between -2 °C and -6 °C were measured in Turkey. To what extent the night frost will have an impact on the blossoms and further crop rotation remains to be seen; we cannot clearly determine this at the present stage. Since the beginning of the year, export checks on hazelnuts from the Turkish growing regions have been heightened. In particular, quality controls of the imported nuts are now stricter. These additional quality controls are especially noticeable in our cold pressed hazelnut oils and the hazelnut flour we produce in Niederkrüchten-Dam. We have already secured sufficient quantities of hazelnuts to produce our refined hazelnut oil. We will be happy to send you the corresponding data sheets and prices upon request. Our product focus, besides the whey and proteins, is geared towards our vegetable oils: almond oil, walnut oil, apricot kernel oil, castor oil, castor oil derivatives, MCT oil, oils for personal care, sebacic acid and the world of organic and gourmet oils.
