Alongside our familiar range of nut oils, such as almond oil, hazelnut oil and walnut oil, we also have to include our macadamia nut oil. Renowned as the queen of nuts, the macadamia’s attraction will not disappoint. The macadamia journey began many years ago in Australia and now the nut can be found flourishing in tropical growing regions and also in South Africa. It grows in a green shell on an approximately 20 metre tall tree and is protected by a round, hard, brownish outer layer. The bright yellow kernel, depending on the variety, contains about 50%-70% fat and after cold pressing is processed into a high-grade gourmet oil. The initial information we have from growing areas bodes well for this year’s crop. Many farmers in Australia expect a record harvest of 50,000 tonnes, but even so are keen to increase capacity in the coming years due to the increase in worldwide demand for macadamia nuts that is set to continue. Furthermore, help may come from new technology capable of shortening the crop cycle by a considerable margin, but it will take as long as 5 years for this goal to be reached. Among all vegetable-based oils, macadamia nut oil has the highest content of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and a balanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. According to the latest medical discoveries, this ratio plays a decisive role in whether a person has a high or low risk of arteriopathy. Macadamia nut oil is used mainly in cosmetics either as refined base oil for creams or as cold pressed massage oil, enabling the natural active ingredients to be massaged directly into the skin. In the kitchen, this extraordinary nut oil with its buttery flavour adds a delicious touch to green leaf salads, fish dishes and also desserts. We supply these oils in various grades and will gladly send you samples to help identify the right oil for your needs. If you have any questions, the OPW Ingredients team will be happy to assist you. Our product focus besides the whey and proteins is geared towards our vegetable oils; Almond oil, Walnut oil, Apricot kernel oil, Castor oil, Castor oil derivatives, Sesame oil, MCT oil, oils for personal care, Sebacic acid and the world of organic and gourmet oils.
