ISO 9001:2008 and HACCP Certificate confirmation

07. February 2014

On 1st October 2013 the company OPW ingredients GmbH celebrated the first anniversary. For the entire Team one thing was certain; many things had been done well in the past, but, the corresponding certificates proving the same, were missing!. That was the reason why Onno Jongkind called me on a sunny summers’ day with the request to support OPW in getting the ISO 9001 : 2008 and HACCP standards certified. Building upon my long years of service as departmental head in a leading food processing organization, I have worked for the past 15 years as senior consultant at TüV Rheinland. Already after a very brief spell at OPW it became evident that this assignment would be a “special one!” I was greeted by a young, dynamic Team with ambitious goals. When a company supplies large volumes of proteins, whey and oil products such as almond oil, walnut oil, apricot kernel oil, sesame oil, MCT oil, sebacic acid, castor oil, castor oil derivatives, various organic oils and fats as well as a wide range of general vegetable oils in personal care food, pharmaceuticals and various technical industries, one has to ensure the customers can rely on the highest possible standards in quality, service and organization. In the course of this, the ISO and HACCP standards and certification trajectory was decided upon to confirm and certify the quality standards, hygiene standard and corresponding working processes at OPW ingredients GmbH. After a very short period I was convinced that many procedures and business processes implemented at OPW were already conform to the norms. As a consequence it was mainly my job to reproduce, document and refine the procedures and processes in place at OPW. Those solid pre-requisites and the total commitment of the entire OPW Team did not make me doubt for a second that this company would successfully pass the audit on 10th December 2013, which was conducted by TüV Rheinland. From now on my desk was at least once a week in the company’s premises in Viersen-Mackenstein. With the support of Thilo Schröer each business process was documented and refined. We started scrutinizing the supply chain to improve the process of the OPW supplier evaluations. The quality, hygiene procedures and handbook were evaluated and normed according to the requirements of ISO 9001: 2008 and HACCP. Subsequently the theme of workers safety, crisis and risk management were documented with due regard of all prevailing legal and statutory requirements. For this the company employees were trained by various external specialists (for example by Mr. Beser for safety, health and environment). For many days, in fact weeks on end - business coach Mrs. Melanie Bollien-Jung (Impetus Coaching) was part of the TEAM driving individual and group session to identify specific strengths and weaknesses. Particularly the group-coaching sessions were at times hilarious, at other times caused he TEAM to think and ultimately meant that everyone welded even stronger together than before! We went full circle, and this ultimately meant that nothing stood in our way of the final audit. One week prior to the external audit, I slipped into my role as auditor conducting a highly serious internal audit, where it was evident that each department in the company knew exactly what was to be done and what was at stake. Even though I could not imagine that the OPW Team could top the performance of this “dress-rehearsal”, they stepped up to an another level when confronted with the challenge of the final external ISO 9001 : 2008 and HACCP audits, passing with flying colors! On this day the headstone was laid. OPW Ingredients GmbH can now grow even stronger in the future and enter business areas where specifically those ISO 9001 : 2008 and the HACCP are a basic entry condition and demanded by the customer as part of the final approval process. I am absolutely convinced that they will be very successful in the future and I would like to thank the entire OPW Ingredients GmbH Team, for this wonderful time!  SignaturDr. Peter Lauterfeld (Senior consultant with TüV Rheinland consulting GmbH) [nggallery id="2"]
