One of the world’s oldest crop plants is experiencing a renaissance. Despite the seedy reputation of female hemp plants, people have been increasingly interested in the health benefits of hemp oil, which is extracted from the male plants. The oil is increasingly widespread in pharmaceutics, cosmetics, animal feed and food products.
How hemp oil is made
Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of male cannabis plants. As these plants do not contain any THC, their seeds do not have an intoxicating effect. A gentle cold-pressing process at temperatures of 40–60 °C protects the full effect and aroma of the hemp seeds.
You can recognise good hemp oil by its colour: it should be a beautiful, deep green with a golden sheen. This indicates a high chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll combats iron and magnesium deficiency, which makes it an excellent mineral source for vegans and vegetarians.
Health benefits for dogs and horses
Mix some hemp oil into your dog’s food for an extra health boon: you will soon notice shinier fur and healthier skin. Positive effects have been observed especially in older dogs. The oil has been found to counteract age-related symptoms such as joint conditions, feebleness and emaciation. Horses derive the same benefits from hemp oil, no matter their age.
An exotic treat for everyone
Hemp oil is increasingly popular in cooking, too. Just a few years ago, it was considered an exotic treat used only by gourmet restaurants or sophisticated hobby chefs. Today, its nutty flavour and natural health benefits have made it a widespread ingredient in salad dressings, spreads, pestos and soups.
Get rid of dandruff with hemp oil
Hemp oil is particularly beneficial for the hair and scalp. Applied to the scalp, it can prevent dandruff. (This is why you can find the oil in more and more shampoos, conditioners and masks for dry and flaky skin.)
Hemp oil soothes dry skin
Thanks to its excellent profile of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, hemp oil is widely used in pharmaceutics. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E and B, iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium and zinc. Hemp oil soothes and moisturises dry skin, making it a suitable ingredient in pharmaceutical ointments and lotions for psoriasis and neurodermatitis.
